Adrenal Health: Are you loving on your adrenals?

Alright, guys.  I’m going to talk to you about something not many people are aware of, but is affecting 80% of people! Adrenal Fatigue.

So, what is Adrenal Fatigue? How is it impacting my life? GREAT QUESTIONS! My experience with Adrenal Fatigue was one I thought I’d never overcome.  It’s exhausting, not pretty, and (I) engaged in the Kim K. ugly cry more than a few times because of it. I found out about adrenal fatigue from my wonderful Colorful Eats podcast.  I had no clue what was going on with my body.  I felt like I was going crazy.  I was having mood swings, sleeping 10 hours a night without sleep aid, awake at the most random times and tired at others, unable to do my day to day duties;  I was defeated, and I was convinced I was just going to live the rest of my life in this fog that I called being an adult.  I thought I was depressed because of moving back into my parents house or because I wasn’t happy with how my life was going.  Let me tell you: Take charge of your life!! It’s the most empowering feeling and it’s so worth the work.


Adrenals, first off, are wonderful.  I’m not cool enough for graphics, but those little white things on top of those bean lookin things? Yeah those are your adrenals. They’re two little organs that sit right above your kidneys.  They are a part of your endocrine system.  Did you know, your adrenals produce over 50 hormones that work towards proper body function? They affect everything in your body, basically.  When your adrenal glands don’t keep up with the stress you’re putting on your body, adrenal fatigue kicks in.  Your adrenals are super important because they produce Cortisol.  Ever heard of “fight or flight”? Yeah, this is exactly that! Your body is constantly in fight or flight mode because your adrenals are working so darn hard to produce that Cortisol.  It causes stress physically, mentally, and emotionally.  It is exhausting.  Anything can cause adrenal fatigue from chronic stress to acute smaller every day stressors.

Symptoms include, but are not limited to:

  • fatigue (obviously)
  • body aches,
  • weight gain,
  • hair loss,
  • low blood pressure
  • lightheadedness
  • Cravings for sugar/salt
  • Muscle tension
  • Inability to sleep
  • Poor focus
  • Inflammation
  • and just an overall loss of enjoyment in daily activities.

80%, people!!! 80% of people suffer from adrenal fatigue and don’t even realize it! How have we not brought awareness to this issue that we so easily could fix?? I promise you, if you have been going through these symptoms lately, THERE IS A SOLUTION. Many solutions, as a matter of fact.

The first thing I would recommend is the actual Adrenal Fatigue Diet.  There are a number of foods that could either heal or harm your adrenals.  This diet helps replenish energy while ridding your body of toxins and chemicals. Foods you should avoid that impact your adrenals are: Caffeine, sugar and sweeteners, processed foods, and canola/corn oil.  Giving up caffeine was really hard, not going to lie.  I went from six cups a day to only one! (It was awful, the withdrawal was real, but the outcome is amazing) Basically, you want to take as many inflammatory foods OUT of your diet.  I promise.  Your body will thank you.

So, instead of focusing on what you’re taking out of your body, let’s focus on what you can add to help your adrenal fatigue! Olive oil, butter, ghee, and coconut oil are the best example of good fats and oils you should be eating.  There are so many foods that are easy to digest that can heal your adrenals as well.  They include, but also are not limited to:

  • Cruciferous veggies
  • Salmon
  • Chicken/turkey
  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Greens (Spinach and kale)
  • Himalayan Sea Salt (get pink or grey because they have more nutrients!!

You can also supplement to help for your adrenal health.  I personally recommend Vitamin B12 Vitamin D3 , and Magnesium.  I could go on about Vitamin D3 and how much I love it, but that’s a different blog post for a different day.  Another supplement I would recommend is Ashwagandha Root.

If you’re trying to reduce your adrenals, it’s honestly as simple as a really clean diet and some sleep.  Do the research, put in the work, and heal yourself! I promise you will not regret looking more into adrenal fatigue and you’re doing your body such a favor by adding in all of these great foods.  As much as I could sit here and talk about food and supplements, there’s also a relaxation portion of this that food cannot give you! Take a deep breath, get enough sleep, put in that work for your daily workout.  Get moving! Get breathing, and get relaxing.  Take some time for yourself and really work through this.  You won’t regret it.
